August Heat

Thursday, August 18, 2011 - View Full Newsletter

It's been one of the hottest summers on record, and the drought has all the plants looking like fall is already here. At the risk of making it even hotter, here's our latest news: FootBook Our first iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app has just been released in the App Store. It's a detailed reference for Janome presser feet. Also available on DVD. Get the details here: http://onlinesewing.squarespace.com/footbook/ Online Sewing Magazine - Fall Edition Diane has been hard at work in her sewing room cranking out some nifty fall projects. There are two different kinds of bags (3 versions of each, for varying skill levels), two kinds of flags for your yard, and more. Get it here: http://onlinesewing.squarespace.com/issues/2011/8/18/fall-2011-volume-1-issue-4.html Switching to the Mac Just yesterday my brother-in-law called for help with his PC. For the 3rd time it has been infested with virus and spyware, to the point that it's no longer usable. I've recommended that he switch to a Mac, not just to avoid the malware, but also for improved performance and usability. If you've wondered about switching, I've prepared a complete guide: http://onlinesewing.squarespace.com/issues/2011/8/14/switching-to-mac-a-guide.html We are now tweeting on Twitter (@onlinesewing) and we're on FaceBook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Online-Sewing/119209728090234 In two weeks we'll be heading to Janome Institute in Orlando. We'll have lots to say about what they release, and we'll probably have at least one "extra" issue to talk about it.

What We're Doing Now

By Jim Stutsman - Thursday, April 28, 2011 - View Full Newsletter

Yes, we're enjoying spending a LOT more time with the grandkids, but we haven't been watching Oprah and eating bon-bons! We've just finished the first issue of a new magazine called "Online Sewing". As the name suggests, it will be offered only online. Because we are sending this announcement to several mailing lists, you might get it as many as 4 times. We're very sorry if that happens, but we don't have the resources to check for cross-list membership, and in any case, the list services won't let us mail to just some members. It's all or nothing. This is the only time you will receive an email like this, so don't worry about getting mail-bombed in the future.

"Online Sewing" magazine is produced by Diane and Jim Stutsman. We've had the idea for several years, but the time required to operate our retail store in Frisco, Texas, has prevented us from doing it. After closing the store in February, we started working on it full time. This first issue is, as they say, a "beta" issue. Although it has been created from scratch 3 separate times, it is by no means in its final state. That's where you come in. Future issues will be offered quarterly (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) at a cost of $4 each. We're giving you this one for free, but there's a catch. We want your honest opinions about it. Love it, hate it, or couldn't care less, we really want to know what you think. Please send your evaluations to feedback@onlinesewing.com. We probably will not be able to reply if the volume of responses is as high as we hope, but we will try to do so when appropriate.

Now let's talk about the magazine. It's being distributed as a PDF, which opens on just about any computer, the iPad, the iPhone, and many other devices. We've sized each page to display perfectly on the iPad in portrait orientation. You can print it out if you wish. There are no restrictions. Each issue will contain projects from Diane's library of classes that she's created, but with a twist. For each technique, there will be an easy project suitable for beginners, an intermediate project for those with developing skills, and an advanced project for sewing veterans. As far as we know, this is a first. Please download your copy here:

After you've looked it over, please let us know what you think. Be honest! We need your help to make it the kind of publication you want.

Thanks so much for your help. We really appreciate it!

Retirement Party!

Thursday, January 27, 2011 - View Full Newsletter

Yes, after almost 24 years in the business we've decided to retire and enjoy the finer things in life, like our 5 grandchildren. That means getting rid of nearly a quarter century of accumulated STUFF! Starting Monday, January 31, 2011, everything except machines will be 40% off. Each day the discount will be 3% more, until February 15. At that time whatever is left will be reduced to ridiculous or headed for the dumpster, and we will close for good. During these final days there will be no more repairs, special orders, or classes. This is it - if it shows, it goes! That includes store fixtures as well. Come early for selection, wait longer for deeper discounts. The choice is yours, but after February 15 your chances are gone. Thanks for all the great years - we'll miss you!
